Sobhita's parents speak on Miss India 2013

It’s like a festival at home

Sobhita Dhulipala’s proud parents say their daughter was determined to bring the crown home

At Sobhita Dhulipala’s hometown, the mood is of jubilance and celebration. Ever since the Vizag girl was crowned the First Runner-up at the Pond’s Femina Miss India 2013, her parents — Venugopal Rao, a chief engineer (Marine) with the Merchant Navy, and Santha Kamakshi, a school teacher in the primary wing at GVMC (Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation) — are ecstatic. “We are feeling very happy as our daughter was crowned the winner amongst 23 beautiful women from across the country. It feels like we are celebrating a festival at home. We are very proud of our daughter right now,” said Santha Kamakshi.
Although the parents didn’t get the time to meet her after the event, they say that they are waiting impatiently to spend time with Sobhita “We were with her at the event, which ended after 10.30 pm. But after that she had to stay back for some formalities. She might come home any time now. Everybody is only waiting for her,” said Venugopal Rao, when we contacted him on Monday afternoon. Ask him what will be the first thing that he will tell her and the proud papa says, “I will tell her, ‘We are very happy for you. You won this battle wonderfully, all on your own. We really appreciate all the efforts you have put into this and you
have a long way to go’.” She was determined to bring the crown home
These celebrations come as a welcome change from the tense mood that the family was in during the entire course of the pageant. “All the girls who were participating were very pretty and we were just a bit concerned about where she would stand amidst such fierce competition from all these beautiful girls from across the country. But the way she carried herself and the way she confidently answered the questions posed by the judges was very impressive. And I’m not saying this because I’m her father. If I were judging the contest, even I would make her the winner. She did a great job out there.”
Ask him if Sobhita underwent any special training before the pageant and Venugopal says, “She would watch videos of all the previous contests and various other pageants from around the world. She would read a lot and watch a lot of videos to keep herself updated. She started hitting the gym only last year and also had to take extra care of her diet.”
Sobhita was a one-woman show, he adds. “She took care of everything by herself. We were there only if she needed any financial support or moral support,” her father says. So, did all the intensive preparations get her too worked up? Venugopal says, “She called home everytime she was feeling down. Once, she called and told us, ‘This is going to be a very long journey. I don’t know what will happen, but I will leave no stone unturned to give it my best’. I think at some point, the pressure would get to her, but she would always look up to us for support. She was however, also very confident. She would always ask us to stay calm and say, ‘let’s cross our fingers and see what happens’ She was very positive throughout.”
Sobhita’s dad also reveals that she very focussed on bringing home the crown. “When she participated in the Navy Queen Ball in 2010, she had a single-minded focus and participated in the pageant with full interest. Ever since, she has never looked back. Even though she started receiving several offers for modelling and even a movie offer back then, she decided not to take up anything else until she won the Miss India title. That’s how determined she was,” he says.
So, does she have filmi plans next? “We will support her no matter what she wants to do.”

I CHANNELLED MARILYN MONROE, NOT MOTHER TERESA

It’s yet to sink in...
I’ve been preparing for the Miss India pageant for months now. Sunday passed like a dream. When my name was announced on stage, I went up, got crowned and did all those things, without realising that I had won! It is yet to sink in. It’s a dream-come-true for me, so maybe it’ll take time.
I was an introvert
I grew up in Vizag. My father is a marine engineer and I come from a conservative Telugu Brahmin family. As a child, I was a complete introvert. But I realised that I needed to be more social, so I started training in dance, took part in elocution etc. I watched the Miss India contest on TV every year and aspired to be there someday, but when it actually happened, it was unbelievable!
I owe a lot to classical dance
I’m a trained Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dancer. Though I was an introvert, dance helped me express myself. I believe that dance is the language of the soul. Unfortunately, classical dance isn’t appreciated much. But at the Miss India contest, I staged a Bharatanatyam recital and won the Miss Talent contest! Such appreciation is encouraging. Dance has also taught me patience. At the pageant, when all eyes were on us, I was surprisingly calm and composed. I wasn’t nervous to walk up to the judges and answer their questions.
I was honest, and it paid off
People always make fun of beauty pageants and criticise contestants for using the ‘Mother Teresa template’ for all their answers. I wasn’t conscious about it, but when I was asked the question
‘What would be your one regret if you were to die tomorrow?’, I quoted Marilyn Monroe, who said, ‘Regrets are stupid, so no fears’, and then said that I would like to spend my last day on earth partying with my sister and letting her know how much I love her. Beauty pageant purists may have scoffed at this answer, but the judges just loved it! I quoted Marilyn as I feel she was honest and free-spirited. I believed I should be honest on stage. It helped!
I ran down to hug mom
After winning the pageant, I ran down the stage and hugged my mother tight. We come from a conservative family, and don’t really express our love for one another in such a manner. My mother was shocked and elated. I could see tears in her eyes. Later when the lights dimmed and I was alone, the first thought that came to mind was to gorge on chocolates (laughs)! I too have movie dreams
Whenever I was in Hyderabad, I would make it a point to watch all the Telugu movies playing in the theatre. I’m a pucca Telugu and love movies (laughs). I absolutely adore Mahesh Babu. The Miss India pageant has successfully launched the careers of so many actors in Hindi cinema. I haven’t decided a career path for myself, but I’m open to doing movies or walking the ramp.
Vizag is me,I am Vizag
I was born in Vizag, and brought up here for most part of my life. I think I embody the spirit of Vizag. The city is patient, laid back and easygoing, surrounded by lazy beaches and beautiful hills. At the same time, it’s fast developing as an IT and business hub. I have imbibed the spirit of my city in me — patient, chilled out, yet beautiful in its soul. Hyderabad, on the other hand, has been fun to visit every time. I have extended family there and it is one happy reunion whenever I visit the city. My family, cousins, friends and people from my school have supported me so much. I plan to go back to Vizag soon and meet all of them. Then I’ll make a stop at Hyderabad and chill out. It would be the perfect vacation!
